If you need a replacement power steering cylinder for your John Deere X Series tractor, there are two types. These two cylinders are different sizes and they are not interchangeable. This guide shows you how to identify the correct cylinder and how to install it.
After my X748 steering cylinder leaked, I designed a better replacement. The new cylinder has a serviceable design and a stronger build. It restores smooth steering and stops leaks. It costs far less than the OEM part.
Why I Designed My Own Steering Cylinder
The OEM cylinder costs up to $1,500. I knew I could build a better part for less money. I designed my own replacement steering cylinder with these goals:
- Serviceable design — You can rebuild or repair the cylinder. You do not throw it away.
- Stronger construction — A stouter ram that handles long-term use.
- Direct bolt-on fit — No modifications. No special tools. It bolts in like the original.
Two Cylinder Variants — Short and Long
John Deere X Series tractors use two different power steering cylinders. The cylinders are not interchangeable. You must install the correct cylinder for your tractor.
Short Cylinder — AM147178 (Standard Front Axle)
The short cylinder fits tractors with the standard front axle. This is the most common type.
- OEM part numbers: AM147178, AM129510
- Fits models: X575, X585, X595, X728, X748
- Retracted length: approximately 275mm (between clevis pin centers)
- Stroke: approximately 100mm
Long Cylinder — AM147180 (Hydrostatic Front Axle)
The long cylinder fits tractors with the hydrostatic front axle. This axle type uses a longer cylinder.
- OEM part number: AM147180
- Fits models: X728, X729, X738, X739, X748, X749, X758
- Retracted length: approximately 430mm (between clevis pin centers)
- Stroke: approximately 210mm
Important — Check Your Tractor
Models X728 and X748 were made with both axle types. You must measure your cylinder before you order a replacement.
How to measure: Measure the retracted length between the two clevis pin centers.
- If the length is approximately 275mm → order AM147178 (short, standard axle)
- If the length is approximately 430mm → order AM147180 (long, hydrostatic axle)
Manufacturing the Cylinder
Both cylinder types are built to OEM specifications. Each cylinder is fully serviceable. The seals and wipers can be replaced. You do not need to buy a complete new cylinder when the seals wear.
Specifications for both variants:
- Cylinder bore: 40mm
- Rod diameter: 25mm
- Working pressure: 16 MPa
- Ports: 7/16-20 UNF (SAE #04)
- Serviceable assembly for long-term use
- Locally stocked in Brisbane, QLD
The Installation — Bolt-On Success
I removed the old leaking cylinder and bolted in the new unit. It fit perfectly — same as the original. The steering leak stopped. The problem was solved.
Instead of paying $1,500 for an OEM cylinder, I now have a stronger, rebuildable cylinder for a fraction of the cost. Both variants are in stock and ready to ship from Brisbane.
Why I Share This
OEM parts prices are too high. That is why I made these cylinders available. If your X Series tractor needs a steering cylinder, you can get a quality replacement without the dealer markup.

Free 3D Printed Dust Plugs for Hydraulic Couplers
While you’re maintaining your hydraulic system, protect the quick-connect couplers when they’re disconnected. Dirt or moisture in an open coupler can contaminate your entire hydraulic system.
I built a free parametric dust plug generator for ISO 5675 agricultural quick-couplers — the standard fitting on John Deere X720 through X758 tractors. Print them in TPU 95A for pennies. The design sits flat on the build plate with an integrated tether — zero supports required.
