Taming a Dell Precision 5560: How to Make High Performance Work Without the Heat Stress

If you’ve ever owned a high-end laptop like the Dell Precision 5560, you know the thrill of raw power — but also the frustration when temperatures skyrocket under load. With an i7 CPU and an RTX A2000 GPU, this beast can push itself to the limit… sometimes to 100°C, which feels a little too “on the edge” for comfort.

For those of us a bit old-school, it still seems crazy that consumer hardware is allowed to hit triple digits — and one has to wonder, is 100°C even an arbitrary number set by engineers, or a hard ceiling of survival?

Here’s how I approached keeping my Precision 5560 fast but reliable.


1. Accept That High Performance Needs Respectful Hardware

First off, if you buy a machine this powerful, you have to let it work hard… but in a controlled way. The goal isn’t to throttle performance unnecessarily — it’s to manage heat so your hardware lasts.


2. Tackle Thermal Bottlenecks Physically

I found that adding a PTM7950 phase change pad between the CPU and heatsink dropped temps by roughly 10°C. Not a magic bullet, but a significant improvement. Thermal pads, quality thermal paste, and ensuring proper airflow can make a world of difference.


3. Let the Fans Do Their Job

Dell’s Performance Mode is a game-changer. Switching to Performance Mode ramps fan speeds higher, which immediately curbs temperatures. This seems to be the biggest single factor in keeping temps under control — a reminder that sometimes, software settings that help airflow matter more than tweaking voltages.


4. Use ThrottleStop to Control Turbo and Power

Here’s the thing about the Precision 5560’s i7-11800H: you cannot undervolt it. Intel locked that down in firmware. But that doesn’t mean ThrottleStop is useless — far from it. ThrottleStop gives you control over turbo boost, Speed Shift, and power behaviour in ways that dramatically reduce temperatures without sacrificing real-world performance.

Here’s exactly what to do, step by step.

Step 1: Download ThrottleStop

Grab it from TechPowerUp — it’s free. Extract the ZIP and run ThrottleStop.exe. No installer needed.

Step 2: Disable Turbo Boost

This is the single biggest thermal improvement you can make. Check the “Disable Turbo” box on the main ThrottleStop window. This locks your i7-11800H to its base clock of 2.3 GHz instead of boosting to 4.6 GHz. The result? CPU temperatures plummet, and for most workloads — browsing, coding, office apps — you won’t notice any difference. Games and rendering will take a small hit, but the laptop stays quiet and cool.

Step 3: Adjust Speed Shift — EPP

Click the FIVR button, then look for Speed Shift — EPP (Energy Performance Preference). The value ranges from 0 to 255:

  • 0–64: Aggressive performance — CPU races to max clock, runs hot
  • 128–192: Balanced — good responsiveness, moderate temps (recommended)
  • 192–255: Battery-saver — CPU stays low, snappy enough for basic tasks

I settled on 192. The machine feels snappy but doesn’t launch itself to 100°C every time I open a browser tab.

Step 4: Increase Speed Shift Time (STT)

Still in the FIVR window, find Speed Shift Time. This controls how quickly the CPU jumps to a higher clock speed. The default is aggressive — the moment the CPU sees load, it slams to full turbo and heat spikes instantly. Increase the STT value slightly and the CPU ramps up more gradually, smoothing out temperature spikes while still reaching full speed when sustained work demands it. This pairs perfectly with the EPP setting above.

Step 5: Auto-Start ThrottleStop with Windows

You don’t want to manually launch ThrottleStop every reboot. Use Task Scheduler:

  1. Open Task Scheduler (search “Task Scheduler” in Start Menu)
  2. Click Create Task (not “Create Basic Task”)
  3. Name it “ThrottleStop”
  4. Check “Run with highest privileges”
  5. On the Triggers tab, add a new trigger: Begin the task: At log on
  6. On the Actions tab, add a new action: Start a program → browse to your ThrottleStop.exe
  7. Click OK, enter your Windows password, and you’re done

Now ThrottleStop launches silently at every login, applying your turbo and Speed Shift settings automatically. Set it and forget it.


5. The Result

With these tweaks — better thermal interface material, Performance Mode with aggressive fans, Disable Turbo, and careful EPP + STT adjustment — my Precision 5560 rarely exceeds 80°C, even under sustained load. That’s a 20°C drop from the original 100°C spike. The laptop is still fast, the CPU and GPU work hard, but everything runs reliably and safely.

      Hi there you need to install throttle stop https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=throttlestop and also check out point 3.5 disable turbo. This makes the largest difference. Have you tried re pasting the cpu?
