What if an older BMW with CCC navigation could use newer map data on a DVD? I have started investigating whether that idea is technically possible, and I’m looking for owners who would want to follow the project.
What is being explored
The current work is reverse-engineering the structure of a BMW Professional navigation DVD and building a small browser-based map viewer. It can now decode and draw a small sample of roads from a North America map disc. A checked Boston-area sample lines up plausibly with independently mapped streets. That is a useful step: it suggests the geometry can be interpreted and rendered. It does not show that new maps can already be built or loaded into a car.
AI tools are helping with code and analysis, but the difficult work is still careful measurement: finding how the DVD stores roads and related map objects, testing those interpretations against real geography, and learning what the CCC unit expects. The long-term idea is to see whether map data from a modern source could be converted into a format an older unit can use.
What is not known yet
This is a research project, not a product, preorder, or promise that a working update will be available. The sample disc covers North America; it is useful for studying the format but is not a suitable Australian map. The research has not established that a complete new map can be generated, that it will cover Australia, or that a particular car and CCC software version will accept it.
Compatibility depends on the actual navigation hardware and map format. If you are interested, please share the BMW model and year, the navigation unit if known (for example CCC), and your country or region. Please do not send your VIN, passwords, or other sensitive information.
Register interest
Use the form below if you would like an occasional update or want to tell me what you would need from a project like this. This is only an expression of interest. It does not reserve a product or sign you up for marketing. Your details will be used to reply about this project.
Follow the technical work
The goal is to publish the method and evidence as the format becomes better understood, including what remains uncertain. If you have experience with BMW CCC navigation, DVD map formats, or map-data conversion, your practical knowledge could help identify useful compatibility checks.
