Why generate washers instead of finding STLs?

Washers are simple parts, but finding one with the exact outer diameter, inner diameter and thickness you need can be surprisingly time-consuming. The generator handles three common cases:

  • Flat washers: standard washer with a hole through the centre
  • Solid spacers: set the inner diameter to 0 mm and you get a flat disc — useful as a standoff, shim or pad
  • Custom sizes: any OD from 5 mm to 200 mm, any ID from 0 mm to 190 mm, any thickness from 0.4 mm to 20 mm

Washer generator parameters

  • Outer Diameter (OD): 5 mm to 200 mm — the full diameter of the washer
  • Inner Diameter (ID): 0 mm to 190 mm — hole diameter; 0 gives a solid disc
  • Thickness: 0.4 mm to 20 mm — how thick the washer should print

Presets for common washer sizes

Three quick-start presets cover the most common metric washers:

  • M10 Washer: 20 mm OD, 10 mm ID, 2 mm thick
  • M8 Wide Washer: 30 mm OD, 8 mm ID, 3 mm thick
  • M6 Washer: 16 mm OD, 6 mm ID, 1.5 mm thick

Practical uses for a 3D printed washer generator

  • Mounting spacers: print standoffs to gap a PCB from an enclosure
  • Vibration pads: use flexible filament (TPU) for shock-absorbing washers
  • Shaft spacers: generate precise-thickness spacers for bearings and gears
  • Alignment shims: print custom-thickness shims for levelling machines or fixtures
  • Prototyping: test a mechanical fit before committing to a metal washer

How to generate a custom washer STL

  1. Open the Gridfinity Generator
  2. Select Washer from the generator dropdown
  3. Set outer diameter, inner diameter and thickness
  4. Click Generate Preview to see the 3D model
  5. Download the STL and open in your slicer

Printing tips for washers and spacers

  • Print with 100% infill for maximum compressive strength
  • Use PETG or ABS if the washer will experience load — PLA creeps under sustained pressure
  • For precise inner diameters, calibrate your printer’s hole horizontal expansion setting in the slicer
  • Print multiple washers on one build plate by duplicating the part in your slicer
